"Police assess that the death of the settler on Saturday was a terror attack; footage from the scene after the incident shows Palestinians assisted the injured

Palestinians were documented providing medical care to the Israeli wounded and helping evacuate them, contrary to the settlers’ version. The Palestinian driver is barred from meeting his lawyer, and his brother says: “He has never harmed anyone in his life.”

Police are increasingly assessing that the vehicle collision in which Yehuda Sherman was killed in the West Bank on Saturday was deliberate and motivated by nationalism, according to a source familiar with the investigation. According to the suspicion, the incident was preceded by a dispute between the Palestinian driver and Sherman and his companions, who lived in the Shuva Israel outpost. Sherman’s friend, who was injured in the incident, said the driver accelerated before hitting the ATV on which the settlers were riding, and evidence collected by the Judea and Samaria District investigators supports this version.

Initially, a security source said it appeared to be a traffic accident. However, a few hours later—after coalition members issued statements calling the incident a terror attack—the police and the army announced that a terrorist motive was being investigated.

At the same time, documentation from the scene contradicts the testimony of one of the injured. Videos obtained by Haaretz show Palestinians assisting the wounded in the presence of Israelis. The brother of the deceased, Daniel Sherman, had said that after the incident, Palestinians from the nearby village of Beit Ummarin attacked the ATV passengers.

Apart from Sherman, who was 18 at the time of his death, his brother and another person were riding the ATV that was struck. In a video released by the Samaria Regional Council spokesperson, Daniel Sherman described the incident from his hospital bed. According to him, during a “patrol of the area around the farm,” a Palestinian pickup driver who spotted them chased them and rammed them off a cliff. The incident occurred in Area A, where entry by Israelis is prohibited by law. He said: “Arabs from the village started arriving… shouting, cursing us, throwing stones at us. By a miracle I managed to call for help. After a long time, they arrived, managed to rescue us, and evacuated us to a hospital.”

However, footage from the scene during the evacuation shows the ATV on the road and the Palestinian vehicle down a slope. The investigation indicates that the Palestinian driver lost control of his vehicle and rolled down the slope. Videos show Palestinian medical personnel descending the slope to assist the Israelis. Sherman was also documented being evacuated on a stretcher into a Palestinian ambulance, in cooperation between Palestinians and Israelis, one of whom was in IDF uniform. Israelis asked the Palestinians to stop “if you see a military ambulance,” and were told to head toward the Shomron checkpoint. Later, a military force joined the Palestinian ambulance. Magen David Adom personnel initially defined Sherman’s condition as critical, and later pronounced him dead.

The Palestinian driver, a 57-year-old resident of Beit Ummarin, was also injured and taken to hospital. Later, according to the IDF spokesperson, he turned himself in to security forces. His lawyer, Ahmad Khalifa, was informed that he is barred from meeting him for 48 hours.

The driver’s brother told Haaretz: “We were sitting in mourning for our aunt who passed away. My brother left before me, and people said they saw him driving his car among the olive trees on the mountain. It was very rainy. We went there and saw the accident. At first I didn’t know my brother’s condition. We came from the village and helped them—my brother helped them. I saw him between two settlers shouting at them: ‘What did you do? Why are you doing these foolish things?’ He shouted to his son, who arrived at the scene, to bring a blanket or a towel, and he placed it on the wounded.”

He added: “The settler didn’t have a phone. I gave him mine and said, ‘Take it, call whoever you want,’ and he called for help.” The brother provided Haaretz with the numbers dialed by the young Israeli. “My brother has never harmed anyone in his life. I ask the whole world to look at his hands—this is a man who works all the time,” he said, adding that he fears for his brother’s safety, as he “left the hospital and went straight into detention.”

Attorney Khalifa firmly denied that this was a terror attack. “This is a normal traffic accident that could happen to anyone,” he said. “A motorized vehicle that is not allowed on the road surprised a Palestinian driver in Area A.” He added: “The version of the injured brother is baseless and false, driven by an extreme political agenda. It achieved its goal in the numerous attacks against Palestinians over two days, despite clear documentation showing that the suspect and his relatives helped the injured and called the Red Crescent and a local doctor to treat them. The full truth will soon come out. The fact that the case was transferred to the Shin Bet and that the driver is barred from meeting a lawyer reflects the automatic labeling of Palestinians, where every accident becomes a ‘terror attack.’”

Since Saturday night, while the circumstances are still under investigation, settlers have called for revenge on social media. Several incidents have since been recorded in which homes and vehicles were set on fire in the West Bank, and several Palestinians were lightly injured, despite security forces’ preparedness. Settlers also attacked a Border Police officer, lightly injuring him, and damaged security vehicles.

Today, the Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that settlers broke into a boys’ high school in the town of Huwara, sprayed graffiti on its walls, and replaced the Palestinian flag on its roof with an Israeli flag. Graffiti seen at the scene read: “A good Arab is a dead one” and “Revenge.”

The Shuva Israel outpost was established last year in Area C, east of the settlement of Homesh and north of Beit Ummarin, about 400 meters from Area A. “Settlers have been entering the village and walking between the houses for some time,” a resident told Haaretz. “They stole sheep in our village. They’re here all day, behaving badly. I know not all Israelis are like this, but this is our reality. They say Israel is a democracy, but what they are doing is not democracy.”

Last Thursday, two days before the incident, Haaretz asked the IDF spokesperson to respond to footage of settlers—one armed with a long rifle—who came from the outpost to the village on an ATV. According to Palestinian media reports, the settlers beat residents and sprayed them with pepper spray. No response has yet been received.

In a report on the incident in the “Hilltop Youth News” group, settlers criticized an IDF officer who arrived at the scene and refused to act against Palestinians. According to the report, another force arrived later and “pushed back the rioters” only after appeals to higher-ranking officers. Palestinian television reported that soldiers used crowd-control measures against residents. Israelis were also documented driving through the village yesterday.

In his eulogy for Yehuda Sherman, Finance Minister and Minister in the Defense Ministry Bezalel Smotrich said: “We will dismantle the entity of evil and terror known as the Palestinian Authority. We will erase the lines, the definitions, and the letters, and we will settle our land in all its parts.” Samaria Regional Council head Yossi Dagan added: “Our duty as citizens is to demand improved security after the severe attack, and certainly to further strengthen settlement in northern Samaria.”

The Shin Bet did not respond to Haaretz’s questions regarding the investigation findings or the detention conditions of the Palestinian driver."

The toll of injuries on the town of Deir al-Hatab, east of Nablus, on Sunday evening has risen to nine, including one caused by live fire. Ahmad Ameed, director of the Ambulance and Emergency Center at the Nablus Red Crescent, reported that paramedics treated a 45-year-old man who was shot in the foot during the attack, along with eight others injured by the pogroms, including a woman who suffered bruises and suffocation due to tear gas inahaltion. The paramedic teams confirmed that the injuries include: one gunshot wound to the foot, six injuries from beatings, one injury from smoke and tear gas inhalation, and one fall resulting in a fractured thigh.

Retaliation pretext

The raids come amid near-daily attacks in recent weeks and rising fears of retaliation after a settler was killed in a separate incident under investigation. These followed calls circulated on open networks to carry out revenge for the death of the young Israeli who was killed yesterday afternoon after being struck by a Palestinian vehicle in Beit Omerim. While, at this stage, the security establishment has not yet defined the incident in which he was killed as a terrorist attack. In fact, initially the system assessed that it was likely a traffic accident, and only after ministers from the Religious Zionism party claimed he had been murdered did the police and the army issue statements saying that a suspicion of a terror attack was being examined. In the background — the incident occurred in Area A, and according to some reports took place during a “land survey.”. According to a security source, the Palestinian driver was also injured in the collision and evacuated for medical treatment; therefore, the claim that the vehicle was stolen currently appears unlikely.

According to יריב אופנהיימר (Yariv Oppenheimer) Israeli public figure, activist, commentator, and media personality known for his involvement in peace and human rights advocacy, there are two version of this accident, both versions indicate the deaths were accidental and not caused by a Palestinian attack.

Version 1: Road accident

Settlers were driving an ATV at high speed in Area A. The ATV took a sharp turn and collided with a Palestinian vehicle, which then rolled into a wadi. One of the settlers on the ATV died. The damaged ATV has not been documented, raising some doubts about this account. This version suggests an unintentional accident, not a planned attack.

Version 2: Theft and escape

Settlers allegedly stole a Palestinian pickup truck. While fleeing in the stolen vehicle, they lost control and the truck fell into a wadi. This also does not indicate a terrorist attack, but an accident resulting from an illegal act (vehicle theft) that went wrong.

Perpetrators:

"Today at 9:00 PM we will go out to the junctions! Jewish blood is not cheap!" This is a post from March 21, 2026, evening on Hilltop News, the West Bank's Hilltop Youth WhatsApp group. Later that night at least 15 Palestinian villages were attacked by settler terrorists. It's all organized and carried out completely out in the open

The “King David Brigades” claimed responsibility and announced that they maneuvered between the villages and set fire to dozens of vehicles and homes. Along with a well-produced video, in a group that has been openly and extremely inciting for many months. According to Matan Golan, journalists in Haaretz covering these progroms, "boasting and incitement to violence against Palestinians are not considered offenses by the Israeli security establishment, particularly the police and the Shin Bet."

Text published on Telegram:

"Ansh News A campaign of revenge across Judea and Samaria Documentation of King David's battalions at night maneuvering between the villages In Jaloud, Fandocumia, Sebastia, Silat Al-Hazar and Kiryat, dozens of vehicles and houses were set on fire, and on Silat Al-Hazar the following inscriptions were sprayed: "Regards to stand out" "Benjamin" "Star of David" The equation is simple: Jews are not silent about Jewish blood being shed!! Ansh News"

Rule of Israeli army:

In the morning of March 22, no arrests have been reported, consistent with a pattern of impunity in settler violence cases.

According to the Israeli journalist Matan Golan on X, reports that the army did not reach the sites of settler attacks are inaccurate, and the reality appears more troubling.

In the village of Jalud, a first attack around 23:30 was relatively quickly repelled, with security forces reportedly arriving at the scene. However, between 02:00 and 03:00, a second, more severe wave of attacks took place, involving dozens of participants.

Jalud, located near the Shiloh settlement bloc, is often a vulnerable point, serving as a “springboard” between areas and frequently targeted. The occurrence of a second large-scale attack there, ending with zero arrests, raises serious concerns about either the operational capability of the group calling itself the “King David Brigades” or the conduct of the security forces.

Golan questions how, after such a prolonged night and a return to the same village, no arrests were made—particularly how around 100 masked individuals could carry out attacks and then return to nearby settlements under IDF security without being identified.

Instrumentalization of the death of Sherman:

On March 22, at the funeral of Hilltop Youth Yehuda Shmuel Sherman, Bezalel Smotrich gave a eulogy and promised to "erase the letters". He was referring to the ongoing state-backed campaign of establishing terrorist settler outposts also in Areas A and B, which are supposedly under the civil control of the Palestinian Authority: "We'll bring down the authority of evil and terror known as the PA. We will erase the lines and definitions and the letters. We'll settle our land in all its territory." In fact, a new sub-movement of the Hilltop Youth, titled "Kingdom of Judea", has emerged in recent days, aimed specifically at establishing those new terrorist outposts and erasing the lines between Areas A, B, and C, as was, according to the eulogies, the dead terrorist's vision.

The details for each video come from social media. None of it has been verified.
