Event Notes

Progroms and raids on Kharaba and Ghwein

On January 9, 2026:

Settler and military attack in the village of Kharaba: during the night, six residents were injured and one resident was arrested. Settlers invaded Kharaba, broke into a sheep pen, attempted to steal sheep and attacked the residents with stones. Settler-soldiers arrived, joined the attackers and fired several shots in the air. Soldiers then joined, throwing stun grenades at residents, and brutally beating them in the yard of their home.

Among the injured are a woman who suffered burns from a stun grenade that struck her leg, and a young man with broken teeth and a dislocated arm after being struck with a rifle.

Several residents were taken by settlers, both in and out of uniform, who stripped them, tied them up, blindfolded them, and beat them. While bound, naked, and with rifles pressed against their heads, the residents were threatened that they must leave their homes and demolish them by tomorrow, or else the attackers would return and shoot them in the head. Among the attackers was settler Mordechai Zacharia from the new outpost established near the neighboring village of Ghwein.

During the night, soldiers again raided Kharaba and conducted searches in homes. Today at noon, soldiers returned, threw stun grenades, and smashed the front door of one of the houses.

Shortly before this report, Mordechai Zacharia blocked residents at the entrance of the nearby village of Ghwein, leading to the arrest of three residents by the army.

"In Khirbet al-Khiraba. About 2 kilometers west of the village of Ammanzail. We are greeted by K.D., whose father, A., joins us with the brothers, six in number, who have been living here for the third generation. The family originally hails from a village near Hura in the Negev, who were expelled in 1948. In 2021, K. and Monia, his brother, were detained for a month and a half in the Ofer refugee camp, even though they had work permits, and were charged with forging the documents. An outpost was established near their home by Mordechai Zakaria, along with other settlers, youth. Settler incursions like yesterday happen several times a day. Mordechai's sheep are regularly allowed to drink from the family well. The water is transported either fromSamua orfrom Amenizal in a tanker for a high fee. The family has 100 sheep. When there were 200 7 months ago, they were sold to buy food. Near the house is evidence of stun grenades thrown here a few days ago by three settlers wearing military uniforms, at 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. The family called the police and the army, and the police said, as usual, to contact the army. The army came, and did nothing. Ali the father was taken into custody three times. The first time was in February, 20 days after Mordechai demanded that the military arrest him. His only crime was to prevent the settlers from stealing their flocks. He was arrested twice more, and each time he was beaten and injured. About a month ago, K. and four of his brothers arrived at their farmland (near Amenizel). Bezalel Talya, Mordechai Zakaria and other settlers removed the brothers, and for two hours they did not allow K. to move. They took the seeds of barley and wheat, and 200 dunams will not be sown this year. K. shows us a new outpost established by Mordechai Zachariah, which can be seen in our photo, near the settlement of Beit Yatir (Metzdot Yehuda) andAmeneizel. As we all sit down and eat the wonderful maqluba of the mother of the family, K. says: Here is Mordechai with his van loaded with ready-made packages of hay that were apparently stolen from a Palestinian field, a routine occurrence. In his estimation, he leads it to Susya to feed the sheep and cows of the settlers who live there. Next to them lived the Khalila family. A family of shepherds has been living there for about 20 years. Like all the Palestinian shepherds inMasafer Yatta, sheep are sold to buy food. Some of them speak Hebrew after many years of working in Israel, until October 7. We brought food, clothes and other donations that made the family happy. It is important to say that they have a protective presence by Israeli and international volunteers, almost 24 hours a day. (Kudos to the volunteers in all the occupied territories). We were invited to come again, and we will be back of course."
