Journalist Ali Aljafarawi's firsthand account of Israeli deadly airstrike on a mother and her child in Gaza City

Original Social Media Post

"“I was shocked to find a little girl amid the flames,” says Ali Al-Jaafarawi, the Palestinian journalist who pulled three-year-old Maryam Ahmed Ghanem out of a burning apartment in Gaza City at around 4am on Wednesday. He heard Israeli occupation aircraft overhead, then a strike on an apartment near Al-Shifa Hospital, and ran to the building. He was the first one there. Civil defence and ambulance crews arrived late, he says, for one reason only: they no longer have the equipment they had before the genocide. Inside, he and the neighbours followed the sound of a child screaming and found Maryam trapped in the burning room, with the fire and smoke too thick for anyone to get in. It took him two or three attempts before he reached her, carried her out and handed her to the neighbours. The whole time she was trapped, Maryam was watching her mother burn in front of her. She is now at Al-Shifa Hospital, struggling to breathe from smoke inhalation and with burns across her body. Her father was killed at the start of the genocide, and her grandmother is all she has left. “This deal is a lie,” Ali says of the ceasefire. “Just ink on paper. The Israeli occupation army still kills, still targets children.” Source : mokhy3m (IG)" - Source

Mother killed and child orphaned in pre-dawn strike on apartment

Around 4:10 am, an Israeli airstrike targeted an apartment near the ABu Talal intersection in the west of Gaza City.

The strike killed a widowed mother and set the apartment on fire. Journalist Ali Al-Jafarawi who documented the scene, rescued the mother's little daughter from the fire and suffered from smoke inhalation.

The child Maryam Ahmed Mahmoud Ghanem was two and a half years old at the time. She suffered third-degree burns. Her father, Ahmed Ghanem, was killed in December 2023. Israel's murder of her mother made her effectively one of Gaza's thousands of orphans.

Names of the martyrs:

  1. Reem As'ad Awad (33 y/o)
